ADUs in Oakland, near Berkeley, CA
Oakland is a separate city with its own ADU categories and its own permit steps.
How Oakland sorts ADUs
The City of Oakland describes three types. A junior ADU converts space inside the home, up to 500 square feet, and requires the owner to live on the property. A Category One ADU converts or rebuilds an existing space such as a garage or basement, with no expansion except a small entrance of up to 150 square feet. A Category Two ADU is a new attached or detached structure.
Oakland says the application has two main steps, zoning approval and then a building permit, and it offers pre-approved plans for studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. Which path fits a given lot is for the contractor and the city to confirm. The Berkeley steps are in the permit guide.
